Below, technically it is summer but nature is still trying to catch up on the growth that didn't happen in icy February, March and even April. Now, in the second week of may, sap is rising and trees and bushes are starting to bud. Whins, however, have been blooming throught the cold spring and are bursting into extra blossom for May.
And here, trees that were exposed to 2 months of icy easterly winds, are still struggling to produce a leaf.
Whitethorn is just pulling ahead, a good thing for anglers since the mayfly season cannot begin till the whitethorn is in bloom - the freshly hatched mayflies hang on the underside of the leaves of blossoming whitethorns growing close to trout lakes and rivers. There are buds on this sheltered whitethorn below so mayfly season may be soon enough.
And here are the willow covered banks of Coolmore also turning green in the late late spring.
