In spite of Irish media's reporting of yesterday as the shortest day of the year, today is in fact 1 second shorter and the solstice happened at 5.30am this morning. The Newgrange sunrise phenomenon occurs over several days, starting as early as the 19 December. The Irish Independent played safe and reported the solstice on both dates http://www.independent.ie/national-news/clouds-leave-solstice-hopefuls-in-the-dark-again-2971174.html

Tomorrow will be 8 seconds longer than today and we can look forward to the day being a whole minute longer by the end of the month with sunset time taking place at 15.59, a full 5 minutes later than today. The new moon, starting Christmas Eve, will add to the lengthening of days effect with brighter night skies up to full moon in January 2012.
