Is Donegal the most littered county in Ireland? (for todays surf report see 6.30am post below. Surf is magnificent, 2 foot peaking in an easterly offshore breeze.)

The bins went in only in the last week even though the beach has been busy since March and the council still hasn't figured out how to empty them.

The litter images below are all taken this morning on and around Rossnowlagh Beach.

The bins, still unemptied on Wednesday although full and overflowing since the  busy northern bank holiday last weekend.

Then there is the ongoing problem of party campers who take over the council car park at weekends and terrorise the local residents. Here are some pictures of how these visitors trash Rossnowlagh.

The boardwalk project below cost the taxpayer €250,000. At present it is being broken up and used as kindling by illegal campers for lighting bonfires. They have, over the years, burned and vandalised several picnic tables in spite of the Council's efforts to use indestructible materials. Ballyshannon fire brigade was called Sunday a week ago to extinguish the last conflagration

Garda response has been minimal.

Get on it now.  Report littering and vandalism. Don't let party scum turn Rossnowlagh into a slum.

    Good afternoon

I refer to your email below which I have picked up. I would be grateful if you could call me to discuss this, in particular the approach taken here which is overly aggressive. The images sent to media will do little to enhance Rossnowlagh's or Donegal's image. Also some of the commentary included in the report attached is of concern, e.g. inviting people to burn picnic tables??

A few comments in response for your info

The Donegal County Council together with many local communities throughout the county make considerable efforts to keep our beaches free from litter, particularly during the blue flag season.

For instance, the Rossnowlagh beach was in fact cleaned before the weekend and again on Monday this week (31st May). The problems highlighted in your photos have arisen since then.

I have spoken to local staff who have arranged for the Mobile Litter Unit to visit that beach this evening and collect the recent littering. This off course diverts that resource from another area on their schedule.

I trust this will go some way to reassure you that the Donegal County Council are indeed meeting their responsibilities re beach maintenance. We will do that most effectively with the support of local communities.

It would be beneficial if you could now update the papers you contacted below and advise them accordingly

    Regards

  2. I didn't read anything aggressive in the report about rubbish etc. Does Rosnowlagh have a regular rubbish clearance schedule provided by Donegal Council?

  3. Yes, it usually does in summer but maybe the service needs to cover spring and autumn too as there can be large crowds then too, if weather is fine.
